My contributions to the group were largely surrounding the fabrication of our installation and all the steps it took to get there. Designing the structure and figuring out logistics; co-ordinating the creation of the exhibition’s different physical elements; who would make which pieces, how big would they need to be, what materials they should be made of; collecting materials. I found that naturally throughout the project the group became more reliant on me to organise everything, which I didn’t mind as I am someone who already likes to organise everything. But it was hard to balance making sure everyone knows what they’re doing and making sure they’re doing it in time, with everything that I had already been assigned to do myself.

I couldn’t be there for most of the final installation day which was frustrating as there were a lot of setbacks and problems to solve which I could have assisted with to make sure it was handled in the best possible way. And because I wasn’t able to do them myself, they were done wrong or not to the standard that I would have wanted. My aversion to group work in the past has been exactly because of wanting to do everything myself to ensure it’s up to my standard. And so, for a lot of things to go wrong when I wasn’t there (like setting up the false wall with the computer frame and hanging the webpages), hasn’t particularly helped with my independent mindset. I think I would prefer to work in a more structured collaborative environment in the future, either as someone in charge or having specifically assigned tasks for me to complete independently (like the colouring work I do/have done for the Drawn To Key West graphic novel and the Ithaqa comics).

Exhibiting is something I’m interested in beyond this project and have been working to begin selling my work (as I already do online) at artist alleys, conventions, festivals etc. Though the process of doing this project has made me consider a combination of the commercial and installation approaches to exhibition, with the idea of promoting graphic novels/comic work through interactive exhibitions where you can purchase the books, other merchandise, see process work, and other interactive elements in order to attract a further audience as well as strengthen the connection with pre-existing audience. I enjoyed the set-building aspect of our project and think that could funnel into creating a really unique and exciting commercial exhibition.
