PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 3

evaluation

On completion of this module I feel more confident in navigating a transition into the professional illustration industry post-graduation. I feel a lot more knowledgable of various career avenues and opportunities I could take in both the short and long term, and am happy with how I have already begun to work professionally with various clients, comic artists and events.

I wasn’t able to focus on finishing promotional materials as much as I would have liked due to dedicating more time working on live projects like commissions and awards, and selling my work in person and online. I have been trying to develop a new direction for my artwork simultaneously which made it difficult to create designs that I felt reflected where I want to take my work, as I haven’t got it figured out enough just yet. I hope that with further practice in my more comic/narratives, mixed media approach I will feel more confident creating a visual branding identity for assets such as my website, business cards and mail outs.

Having the opportunity for paid colourist work on other artist’s comics has been incredible for my research on the inner workings of creating comics and has given example on how I can approach my own long form comic work. I would love to work on more solely colourist jobs like this, whilst also continuing my own practice as an all-aspects comic creator (writer, inker, colourist, letterer); considering that one of my favourite parts of the comic art form is that it involves so many aspects of creative design (character and environment design, creative writing, layout, typography, colouring, drawing, storyboarding, etc). However, all of this does mean that it is a very time intensive practice and I am aware that the pay for comic artists is not high especially starting out. Thus all the research I have completed on various career opportunities has been really helpful in figuring out what other areas of the illustration industry I could benefit from to support myself financially, such as scribing and teaching.
